I just caught a lvl 5 Hockey Morteh, and I was bothered by the results of the IV calculations.

HP + ATK = 5-14
DEF + SPD = 12-16

I don't understand why some Mortys have ranges for their IVs, while others have concrete numbers. anyone know? what bothered me most was just how large the HP and ATK range was: 9. I mean, 5 v. 14 covers everything from poor to great.

Level 5 doesn't tell you anything about IVs because the wild Morty is at their base stats and the game's AI hasn't "trained" it by way of randomly generating stats that are noticeably beyond the initial range. Most people catch Mortys between Level 35 and Level 60 to get more accurate IVs.

As an example, I've evolved like 4 One True Mortys from Level 5 and all with maximum base stats (HP 27 and 17/17/17 for the other stats). As I've trained them, a couple didn't get past HP 479 and my "best" one got 484 for HP and slightly better overall stats than the other. I fought someone's One True Morty the other day and they got theirs at 486 HP, I imagine the rest of the stats were also slightly higher. Same for my Rainbow Shirt, I evolved one from a max stats Orange T-Shirt and I fought someone with a slightly better Rainbow.

In short, there's no telling from level 5 if your Morty will have good IVs, let alone top stats once properly trained. You might have a good chance of having good stats if you can manage to get your Mortys at Level 5 with max stats, but for the highest gains definitely get a Level 35 - Level 60 Morty with really good IVs.

I seem to always get lower then craps morty ivs
Just got my first one at lvl 5 to but...
HP + spd = 0-4
Atk= 5-14
Def= 2-11
Maybe you should be greatfull for what you get?

You could always catch a few more and compare their base stats. Again, it's no guarantee for better IVs, but you can't go wrong with higher base stats if you're catching Level 5s.
